A: SocialSafe is a backup tool for Facebook. It allows you to connect to Facebook and download your photos, friends, status updates and profile, both for safekeeping and so you can view them offline. Socialsafe now also has a Time Capsule feature that enables you to see your friends, photos and profile from previous backups - no more will you delete photos from Facebook and not have a backup!
There are two key reasons SocialSafe exists.
Firstly, no web service is infallible. Any of us could have our Facebook account hacked, deleted or simply lost. It is painful when you forget to save a file and something goes wrong. It is sickening when a hard drive fails and you frantically try to remember when you last backed up. Can you imagine what it would feel like to lose all your friends on Facebook? Can you name them all without looking? What about those photos you uploaded directly to Facebook; are they anywhere else?
Secondly, if you want to access to your account offline, have all your photos on your computer for viewing and do what you want with them - you need SocialSafe. No more laborious individual downloading of images and friends. SocialSafe downloads your information in next to no time (although if you have thousands of photos, the first download may take a little longer!). This aspect of SocialSafe will get more exciting in later versions.
We are also in the process of releasing some very exciting new point releases (we've recently released Time Capsule - take the SocialSafe tour to find out more). Point releases are free for those who have already purchased the application and, when we release them, your SocialSafe will automatically update, so there's no reason to wait!
A: SocialSafe works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OSX Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard.
A: We have been informed that SocialSafe does work on Linux, although we have not tested it ourselves. You can purchase SocialSafe for Linux and run it, but unfortunately we can't make any guarantees as to quality or it's working on different configurations at this time.
A: Definitely not. Paypal has, for several years, allowed you to make purchases without the need to use or create a Paypal account. Go to the purchase page and you'll have purchased SocialSafe in minutes - whether you have a Paypal account or not!
A: SocialSafe is an incredibly simple application, built on Adobe’s Air platform, to provide
a one touch backup solution that works on PCs and Macs. You can find out more about Adobe Air at Adobe's website.
A: No. However, don’t worry if Adobe Air is not installed on your machine. Our downloader will install it for you before installing SocialSafe.
A: We don't offer a SocialSafe trial. The application's so cheap, why would you want one? For an introductory offer of $2.99/€2.48/£1.99, you'll be backed up in minutes and won't need to worry about protecting your Facebook account from hacking, phishing or any other data loss again.
A: SocialSafe backs up your Facebook account photos, profile and friends directly to your computer. You can then do whatever you want with the files and information. The files are stored in the following location:
A: The current price advertised on the website is an introductory offer and won't be in place forever. We suggest you buy sooner rather than later to take advantage of the low price!
A: Point updates (for example from version 1.01 to version 1.02) are included in the price. From time to time, when you open the application, you'll be prompted to download an update. However, new full releases (for example when we go from version 1 to version 2) will require an upgrade fee.
A: You can use your license key twice, so you can install on your main computer or device and one other machine.
A: After purchase, your licence key is sent automatically and should arrive within a few minutes (but may take up to an hour). If it doesn't arrive, please check your junk email folder. If it's not there, please use our Self Service facility or contact us and we will get your licence key to you as soon as we can.
A: The application is really very simple and you should be able to install it and use it within minutes. However, you can always contact us with a question or issue via the contact form on the contact page.
A: We certainly do. We have lots of great ideas to make SocialSafe even more useful and we'll be publishing more about the future on the SocialSafe website in the coming months. You’ll also find information on our feedback forum at socialsafe.uservoice.com and our Facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/socialsafeapp.
A: Watch this space!
A: No, SocialSafe does not have access to any of your Facebook account. The friends (and all your friends’ details such as email etc), photos, files or other information you backup using our product are never seen or used by SocialSafe at any time. Other than sending SocialSafe anonymous statistics regarding the number of backups made using our product and checking your licence key, the application does not share any information with us. Your data is your data and we would never invade your privacy.
A: You need to restart your computer after installing SocialSafe to be able to see the SocialSafe icon in the finder.
A: You must stay logged out of your Facebook account whilst backing up your data. Please re-attempt the back-up when you aren't logged in to Facebook. If the problem persists then please contact us via the contact form on the contact page.
A: The first download generally takes the longest due to the volume of data being backed-up. The speed of subsequent downloads will be dependent on how much data you’ve added to your Facebook account since the previous download.
A: Not currently, but this is in our development plan.
A: No. The Time Capsule only works from the data in your first backup onwards.
A: Not currently, but this is in our development plan.
A: According to the Facebook terms and conditions, it is up to the user to back up the details stored on Facebook and SocialSafe abides by Facebook. You the user are accessing your own account (through the official Facebook API they make available to developers like us) to pull your data down onto your machine. This is data you created. There is no scraping of other users’ data as this is against the rules, nor do we at SocialSafe see any of this data. Hence neither you or the SocialSafe application are in violation of any of Facebook’s terms and there should be no chance of your Facebook account being deleted as a result of you installing and using SocialSafe.
A: Restart your computer. If this doesn't rectify the problem then please contact the SocialSafe team using our contact form.
A: Please visit the settings panel in the application (it is represented with a small cog icon). Here you will see a number of tickable options. Please ensure that all boxes are ticked. This will enable the application to backup all the data that it can.
A: SocialSafe does not currently backup Facebook fan pages. We do have this feature in our development plan, although we do not yet have an exact time frame for its introduction.
A: A SocialSafe licence can be used to back up 2 separate Facebook accounts, but only if 2 separate computers are used. Functionality to enable 2 separate accounts to be backed up on one computer is in our development plan and we hope to introduce this functionality in the near future.
A: Unfortunately, we have been obliged to suspend the ability to download tagged photos in order to prevent third party infringement. We do understand that this was a valued feature and we are working closely with Facebook to implement a revised tagged photo download solution.
A: Please refer to our feedback forum at socialsafe.uservoice.com and our Facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/socialsafeapp.
When you use SocialSafe for the first time you may find that it does not bring down all your Status Update and Wall Post history. Unfortunately, this appears to be due to limitations in the Facebook Application Interface (API). In testing we have successfully backed up Wall Posts to January 2007, but we are aware this does not always happen. We have only ever been able to retrieve Status Updates for the last 2 months, as far back as the Facebook API enables us to go.
We suggest that you use SocialSafe regularly so you can build up your Status Update & Wall Post history over time and enable you to enjoy browsing through this history using the unique Time Capsule feature.
